In the work of Professor of the Bryansk State University named after Academician I. G. Petrovsky, Doctor of Historical Sciences E. A. Shinakov, based on the analysis of a wide range of archaeological and written sources, the history of weapons and military culture of one of the most "restless" regions of Russia, which has always been located on the border of various ethnocultural and state areas and even now remains at the junction of three countries at once, is considered. The Russian part of this large historical region is now occupied by the Bryansk and partially - Smolensk and Kaluga regions, the Ukrainian - Chernigov and Sumy, the Belarusian - Gomel and Mogilev regions. A kind of axis of this region from Smolensk to Chernigov is the Desna River with its tributaries, therefore it is called "Podesenye". The chronological framework of the work is from antiquity, the moment of the birth of weapons and military conflicts, to the end of the 17th century, when Podesenye actually ceased to be a restless military borderland. The publication is intended not only for specialists and students, but also for a wide range of readers interested in the military history of the Fatherland and individual regions.
