This narrative is dedicated to one of the major events of the Middle Ages—the First "armed pilgrimage," or "Crusade" (as it was later called), the first of many attempts by Western European (primarily) Christians to recapture the ancestral Christian lands of the Middle East from the "Hagarenes," "Ishmaelites," or "Saracens"—primarily the "Holy Land," or "Land of the Incarnation (of the Lord Jesus Christ)"—Palestine and Syria. This crucial event of the Middle Ages also had its own long prehistory, which latently led the worlds of Christianity and Islam to a monumental clash and, as a result, to mutual enrichment in a wide variety of spheres and ways.

A decisive role in the crusading movement was played by the class of knights, who over time united into military-spiritual orders, the most famous of which was the Order of the Poor Companions (Knights) of Christ and the Temple of Solomon.
