The collection includes the most significant works of the outstanding Dutch historian and cultural historian Johan Huizinga (1872-1945). "Autumn of the Middle Ages" - a poetic description of the socio-cultural phenomenon of the late Middle Ages, a bright, rich encyclopedia of life, art, culture of Burgundy XIV-XV centuries. "Homo ludens" is a fundamental study of the playful nature of culture, proclaiming the universality of the phenomenon of play. In "Shadows of Tomorrow" (1935) deeply analyzes the causes and consequences of the spiritual impoverishment of European civilization on the eve of World War II; this essay was called the key to the work and personality of Johan Høizinga. The report "Man and Culture," prepared for a speech in Austria in May 1938 and not read because of the entry of German troops there in March, proclaims the indissolubility of the individual and culture and is undoubtedly valuable as an expressive and concise statement of Höizinga's views on the essence of the problem he identified.
