Ornament and Crime

This collection of essays by Austrian architect Adolf Loos (1870–1933) brings together key works written at the turn of the 20th century. In the title text, the author declares ornament a "crime" for civilized man and culture. The radical nature of his ideas is based on a rejection of ornamentation and a return to functional and constructive truth. Loos ridicules the "Potemkin" facades of Vienna and calls for a simplicity that is tantamount to true nobility. In Loos's categorical texts, aesthetic decisiveness is combined with a conservative rigor of form. These essays, based not on theoretical dogma but on manifesto and polemical fervor, anticipated the ideas of modernism and laid the foundations of 20th-century design.
