Major General Ivan Grigorievich Akulinin was an Orenburg Cossack, a participant of the wars, Russo-Japanese and World War I, as well as the rebel struggle of the Orenburg Cossacks, assistant to the army ataman, commander of the I and II Cossack corps in 1918-1919. At the end of 1919 with the I Corps he joined the rebel forces of the Ural Cossacks when the rest of the Orenburg Cossacks retreated with the White armies. With the remnants of the Urals, Akulinin left Russia. In exile he published his memoirs about the struggle of the Orenburg Cossack army with the Bolsheviks from the end of 1917 until the remnants of the Orenburg army went abroad in early 1920. The author describes and analyzes the most important events he witnessed and participated in, and tells what sacrifices the Orenburg Cossacks made while fighting the Soviet power. The story is complemented by the history of the Ural Cossack Army's struggle against the Bolsheviks.
