Richard Cantillon is the most enigmatic figure in the history of economic thought, and his Essay on the Nature of Commerce is a book without which economics would be different. Her ideas became the basis of the “Economic Table” of the physiocrats, in many ways anticipated the theory of Malthus’s population, the classical theories of value and money, the theories of entrepreneurship and spatial economics. “The Cradle of Political Economy” was called by W. S. Jevons, having accidentally discovered it a century and a half after writing. This edition is the first complete translation of Cantillon’s Experience into Russian. It is based on the first French edition of 1755 and the English translation of G. Higgs in 1931, as well as on the results of modern studies of Cantillon’s work, reflected in two reissues of The Experience in 2015: a translation by A. Murphy and a unique variorum edition by R. van den Berg. In addition to the text of “Experience”, the volume publishes a translation of Jevons’ article of 1881, which returned the author’s name after a century of oblivion, Alexandra Eidelnant’s article of 1927 – the only work of the Soviet period about Cantillon, as well as an introductory article on the personal fate of the author of “Experience” and an accompanying article on Cantillon’s place in the history of economic science. The publication “Experience” is addressed to economists, historians of science, everyone interested in the Enlightenment and the history of social thought.
