The latest volume in the "Spies. Case No...." series includes two action-packed stories by Ural writer Vladimir Voloskov (1927–1973): "The Operation Continues" (1964) and "The Blue Pass" (1968). A former geologist, Voloskov was well-versed in the life of prospecting parties, the work of drilling rigs, and the price of discoveries that determined the supply of the front during wartime.
In the first story, set in December 1941 in the Urals, where a bauxite deposit essential for the production of military aircraft is discovered, a geologist transporting ore samples and documents dies under mysterious circumstances. Was it an accident or a carefully planned act of sabotage? While the enemy covers its tracks, a small group of security officers and police officers must thwart their plans. A young geologist, Vladimir Ognishchev, a "simple-minded trickster" whose intuition sometimes proves stronger than impeccable questionnaires and well-constructed legends, becomes an unexpected participant in the operation. In the second, in the spring of 1942, materials from a water search for a large chemical plant producing explosives and gunpowder disappear. Former hydrogeologist Major Pyotr Selivestrov is recalled from the front, and the investigation is entrusted to Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Burlatsky of the State Security Service. The two searches—geological and operational—develop in parallel and converge at the drilling rigs where the enemy is preparing to deliver the decisive blow. The precision of professional detail, the harsh Ural nature, carefully crafted intrigue, and vibrant characters make this author's works shining examples of classic Soviet adventure literature.
