During the Great Patriotic War, Mikhail Sholokhov served at the front as a war correspondent. His observations formed the basis of his war fiction – authentic, compelling, and humanistic. The surviving chapters of the novel "They Fought for Their Country" cover the pre-war period and address the complex issue of the repressions of the 1930s, describing the daily life of war and the difficult defense of the Don River crossing.

"The Fate of a Man" reflects the fate common to many Russian soldiers: battles, captivity in Nazi Germany, the loss of all loved ones, the loss of meaning in life... But meaning can be found when orphanhood unites two people who find each other.

Sholokhov's works are illustrated by Yuri Rebrov. The artist paints vivid, realistic portraits of Russian people: they labor at the front and in the rear, find the strength to joke and remain steadfast in their spirit, bringing the moment of Victory closer with each passing day.
