During the Great Patriotic War, Mikhail Sholokhov was at the front as a war correspondent. His observations formed the basis of war prose - reliable, convincing, humanistic. The surviving chapters of the novel "They Fought for the Motherland" cover the period of pre-war life and raise the difficult issue of the repressions of the 1930s, describe the everyday life of war, the difficult defense of the crossing over the Don.

"The Fate of a Man" reflects the fate common to many Russian soldiers: battles, German captivity, the loss of all loved ones, the loss of the meaning of life. But meaning can be found when orphanhood brings two people together who have found each other.
Sholokhov's works are illustrated by Yuri Rebrov. The artist paints lively, realistic portraits of Russian people: they work at the front and in the rear, find the strength to joke and do not lose heart, bringing the moment of Victory closer every day.
