Mother Maria (Skobtsova; Kuzmina-Karavaeva, 1891–1945) is one of the most remarkable Christian thinkers of the 20th century, for her thought is inextricably linked to her life and is always tested and confirmed by it. This is not theorizing about Christianity, but thought that begins in living communion with Christ and is aimed at helping one's neighbor. A poet and artist of the Silver Age, in exile in 1932, she took monastic vows and became a nun in the world, devoting most of her time to providing concrete assistance to disadvantaged Russian émigrés. During the war, in occupied Paris, saving everyone persecuted by the Nazi regime, she was arrested and died in the gas chamber of the Ravensbrück concentration camp. In 2004, she was canonized as a holy martyr by the Patriarchate of Constantinople. This book contains Mother Maria's poetry and prose, mostly written in the final years of her life and the quintessence of her "fiery Christianity": her reflections on the very essence of Christianity, on love for God and neighbor, on suffering and death, on freedom and joy. Having personally experienced all the cataclysms of the 20th century, having channeled them into her own life and thought, Mother Maria, like no one else, can help each of us today to remain human in the face of new historical challenges.
