In the fall of 1935, Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov, correspondents for Pravda and authors of the books The Twelve Chairs and The Golden Calf, traveled to America. In three and a half months they managed to cross the country twice from end to end in a brand new Ford. The result of this trip and became a series of essays "One-Story America" - the last work of the co-authors, published in a separate edition in 1937. Apparently, they were expected to be a scathing satire on the society of capitalism, but the result was a kind and clever book, telling about the life and everyday life of Americans, about meetings with a variety of people, full of interesting stories and observations.
