Isaak Emmanuilovich Babel (1894–1940) was a Russian writer, translator, screenwriter, and war correspondent.

"Odessa Stories" is dedicated to life in Odessa's Jewish quarter of Moldavanka in the early 20th century. At the center is the colorful gangster "king" Benya Krik, often considered a model for Mishka Yaponchik. These stories vividly convey the atmosphere of Odessa's criminal underworld: smuggling, street fights, and the everyday life of city residents, depicted through the prism of subtle humor and a unique language.

The collection also includes the story cycles "The History of My Dovecote," "The Great Spring," "A Petersburg Diary," and others.
