A twenty-year-old tennis coach arrives at a country estate to help a young woman, a renowned tennis player, maintain her athletic form. A strange relationship develops between the young people from the very first day: both feel an inexplicable attraction, despite the difference in their social status and the fact that the woman is already engaged. Her fiancé serves as secretary to a wealthy prince, the scion of an ancient family, and lives with him in a gloomy castle near the estate. This castle is said to be haunted by otherworldly forces, and its impenetrable walls conceal incredible riches. Events soon take on a truly unpredictable character...

Witold Gombrowicz is perhaps the most famous Polish writer of the 20th century, a master of the grotesque and "psychological blackmail" (as John Updike called his unique style). Gombrowicz was nominated for the Nobel Prize four times, and his works are known throughout the world. "The Possessed," a bizarre gothic novel about love and the secrets of the past, was published shortly before the German occupation of Poland and went largely unnoticed at the time. It was only in 1990 that the novel was published in full under the author's real name, and it soon gained widespread acclaim and was translated into many languages.
