A collective monograph written by outstanding Russian orientalists is devoted to ancient technologies and their socio-economic and institutional foundations and introduces agriculture, construction and mining, crafts, transport and communication routes, military affairs of Ancient Mesopotamia and the Nile Valley. The work contains extensive factual material based on both written and visual sources, as well as archaeological data, and from the point of view of methodology reflects an important stage in the development of the science of antiquity.

The text is accompanied by a rich series of illustrations, largely based on the ancient oriental collection of the State Hermitage Museum, of which all the authors of the book were employees. The work, created in the first half of the 20th century, has not lost its relevance today.

The book is aimed at specialists, teachers and students of historical specialties, as well as at a wide range of readers interested in the history, economy, and material culture of the ancient world.
