The very etymology of the word "esoteric" indicates the mysterious nature of knowledge, accessible only to a narrow circle of initiates. But what happens when knowledge for the chosen ones becomes part of mass culture? How does the mysterious and the popular combine? Pavel Nosachev's research is devoted to solving these and other questions.

The author traces the path of the formation of esoteric ideas, images and mythologemes from the mid-19th century (the period of their formation) to the present day, analyzing the influence of esotericism on literature, avant-garde and mass cinema, as well as popular music. From the book, the reader will learn how esotericism unites Arthur Machen and Howard Lovecraft, Anton LaVey and Reza Negarestani, Kenneth Anger and David Lynch, BG and "Orgy of the Righteous", Army of Lovers and Current 93, as well as other writers, musicians and directors. Pavel Nosachev is a Doctor of Philosophy, Professor at the School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, and the author of the book Renounced Knowledge, published by NLO.
