In his book "Public Opinion," based on a comprehensive analysis of the American press during World War I, Walter Lippmann first formulated the idea that people construct their understanding of the world around them based on the opinions conveyed by the media. The majority of the population is held captive by stereotypes and lives in a so-called pseudo-environment, woven from fragments of information supplied by the media. Having made this discovery, Lippmann insisted that society must be more critical in its assessments, and the media must recognize its responsibility to citizens. Otherwise, the entire world risks becoming one vast illusion.
