Herman Melville (1819-1891) was a classic of American literature and an outstanding romantic writer. The novel The Confidence Man: His Masquerade, published in 1857, is one of Herman Melville's last major works of fiction. Most literary critics of the time were reticent about this novel and laid the foundation for the popular belief that it was an example of social satire, where Melville denounces the sanctimonious piety of a significant number of Americans, behind which lies personal self-interest and lust for profit. The novel is published in Russian for the first time in full translation and with commentary.
