Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov (1812–1891) wrote his best novel, Oblomov, after a long break due to a sea voyage. He first published one chapter, which he later criticized and revised, and then spent another year editing the text.

The author imbued the protagonist with the same measured and unhurried character. The kind, intelligent, and poetic landowner Ilya Ilyich Oblomov could have everything he desires, but he spends his days lazily idle on his favorite sofa, indulging in memories and dreams.

He lacks the strength and desire to overcome his isolation. And even love cannot overcome his apathy.

Goncharov reveals the dilemma of a man who misses every opportunity but finds happiness and peace in his situation, and simultaneously presents a composite image of the social stagnation of the mid-19th century.

However, “Oblomovism” has become firmly entrenched in our cultural code and has proven to be a timeless phenomenon.
