This book is a new translation of two treatises by the famous ancient Greek historian Xenophon of Athens (c. 445 - c. 354 BC). The first treatise recommends to a citizen of Athens, elected as a cavalry commander - a hipparch, how best to perform his duties in peacetime and wartime. The second work is an instruction for a Greek horseman on horseback riding, primarily aimed at military training.

As an appendix to the book, the first translation into Russian of all surviving fragments of the Athenian author of the turn of the 5th-4th centuries BC Simon Hippologus "On the Equestrian Art" ("On Horseback Riding") is given - the first to write a special treatise on this topic.
