Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz (1780–1831) was a Prussian military leader, theorist, and historian. A participant in the Napoleonic Wars, he served in the Russian army from 1812 to 1814, fighting at Borodino. He authored a seminal study of warfare that had a profound influence on the subsequent development of military thought. Von Clausewitz's seminal work, On War, is a treatise on the art of war that sets forth his views on the nature, purpose, and essence of warfare, as well as its forms and methods of waging it. It was the culmination of many years of studying military campaigns from 1566 to 1815.
