About the theater

Roland Barthes is little known to our readers as a theater critic. Yet he was deeply interested in theater, not only as a spectator, but also as one of the founders and regular contributors to the journal Théâtre populaire. The fifties were an extremely important time for French theater; it was then that the lines that make up the current theatrical landscape were being mapped out. Whether it is a critical response to a long-neglected play, a political reflection, a theoretical aspect, or an excursion into history, the texts collected here invariably touch on the very essence of theater, and are therefore still of interest today.
