Most readers know Edgar Allan Poe as a writer of detective stories and fantasy, but he also wrote numerous essays and articles on a variety of topics, ranging from codebreaking and musings on cats to speculations on the mysteries of the universe.

One of Poe's interests was cryptography, to which he devoted the article "A Few Words on Cryptography," in which he outlined his thoughts on codebreaking. Another interest was cats, or rather, his cat Cattarina, who lived with him for nearly ten years and inspired the essay "Instinct Versus Reason—The Black Cat," in which he argues that animal instinct can be a more powerful force than human intelligence.

This collection also includes essays on literature and the prose poem "Eureka," which he considered his life's work.
