Can a true believer deny humility and fight evil with force and the sword? Is the death penalty permissible as an extreme way of resisting evil, and is physical repression an act of violence? Philosopher Ivan Ilyin's work On Resisting Evil by Force was written in 1925 in exile as a response to the religious and ethical teachings of Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoyans viewed Christianity as a doctrine of forgiveness, non-resistance to evil by force, and rejection of enmity with any nation. The author denies the idea of non-resistance to evil and believes that not all force is evil and not every use of force is evil. To submit and turn the other cheek means to adapt and resemble evil, to become a part of it. Whereas to stop an evil deed by force, abandoning one's own moral principles and convictions, is a spiritual compromise of man in the name of fulfilling God's will.
