Thomas of Kempis (1379 - 1471) was a Catholic theologian, minister of the monastery at Agnetenberg, writer, adherent of the New Piety spiritual movement, and member of the Fellowship of the Common Life.
The ideal of Christlike living has long been an important element of Christian theology and ethics. But over time, many early Christian traditions found themselves buried beneath the external opulence of the late Middle Ages. And in response to this, a book emerged that ranked second only to the Bible in the number of reprints. The treatise, On the Imitation of Christ, was produced by the New Piety community, which advocated a return to the original practices of Christian teaching and a purging of the Bible of centuries-old layers. In the treatise, Thomas of Campisi criticizes the external piety practiced by the monks and calls for finding inner peace through self-denial.
