Discussions about the steadily increasing pace of modern life have long been commonplace in artistic and humanitarian thought. In response to this universal acceleration, the concept of "slowness" has emerged, i.e. the artificial slowing down of life - including through visual art. In his book, Lutz Köpnik reflects on this phenomenon and analyzes artistic practices that deal "with the extended structure of time and with strategies of doubt, postponement, and procrastination that allow us to slow down and experience the heterogeneous, multifaceted flow of the present". These include the cinema of Peter Weare and Werner Herzog, the photographs of Willie Doherty and Hiroyuki Masuyama, and the media objects of Olafur Eliasson and Janet Cardiff. The author is sure that behind these experiments is not nostalgia for an idyllic past, but a desire to penetrate into the essence of the present and reflect on the nature of time. Lutz Köpnik is a professor at Vanderbilt University and a specialist in visual art and intellectual history.
