Arkady Viktorovich Ippolitov is known to a wide range of readers primarily as an art historian and curator, keeper of the Hermitage’s cabinet of Italian engravings, and also a unique essayist and researcher of “images of Italy.” His other interests are less well known: for several decades, he collaborated with the magazine “Seance” as an author of articles on cinema. He wrote his first printed text for “Seance” in 1993, and in 2008, it was “Seance” that published his first collection. This book includes articles written by Arkady Ippolitov at the request of the editors.
The first part consists of texts inspired by a specific film, genre, or image; they are presented in the order in which they appeared in print. The second part is a reflection on the spirit of the times: from a general view of the 20th century to the essence of the style of the 1960s, the Soviet stagnation, the 1990s, and, finally, the beginning of the 21st century. The preface is the memoirs of the founder of Seance, Lyubov Arkus, who talks about her departed friend.
