Karl Haushofer (1869-1946) was a German geographer and sociologist, the founder of the German school of geopolitics. He received a military education, served in various diplomatic assignments in Southeast Asia, served as a military attaché in Japan, and fought in World War I (retiring with the rank of major general). He was a professor at the University of Munich for many years and founded the German Institute of Geopolitics and the Journal of Geopolitics.

Developing the views of Ratzel, Kjellén, and Mackinder, as well as Bismarck's idea of a Russo-German alliance, the author developed a unique version of Eurasianism—the military-geopolitical doctrine of a "Continental Bloc (Union)" that was intended to unite the states of Eurasia in opposition to the Anglo-Saxon world.

In this doctrine, Haushofer coined the concept of Lebensraum—"living space," which became the official doctrine of the Third Reich. At the same time, Karl Haushofer himself did not share the views of the Nazi elite in Germany and even ended up in the Dachau concentration camp for his beliefs.
