Susan Sontag's collection of essays, On Photography, first saw the light of day as a series of essays published in the New York Review of Books between 1973 and 1977. In the book that made her famous, Sontag concludes that the widespread use of photography leads to a relationship of "chronic voyeurism" between man and the world, whereby everything that happens begins to be placed on the same level and to take on the same meaning. The main paradox of photography, according to Sontag, is that the person who takes the photograph cannot intervene in the event, and vice versa - if he or she participates in the event, he or she is no longer able to record it in the form of a photographic image.
