The term Nuevo Romanticismo ("New Romanticism") originated in José Díaz Fernández's essay of the same name as a designation for a group of writers who became a voice for rehumanization in Spanish culture. Drawing on the theory of the novel presented in Bakhtin's works, Lynn Purkey examines Nuevo Romanticismo through the prism of Russian and Soviet literature. In contrast to the dehumanizing tendencies noted by Ortega y Gasset in Spanish literature, writers César Arconada, Ramón J. Sender, and Lucía Carnes combined avant-garde aesthetics with a focus on the human being in their works, creating a model of politically engaged art—in part through a transcultural dialogue with Russian literary texts. The book explores the profound connections between Spanish and Russian narratives created immediately before and during the Second Republic, as well as themes that have remained enduringly relevant to both cultures over the past century: the ethics of war, feminism, and the growing mechanization of civilization.
