This monograph is the fifth in the author's series dedicated to the history of exploration and toponymy of the Russian Arctic archipelagos.

It is a fascinating account of a group of islands in the eastern Arctic Ocean, lying northeast of the mouth of the Lena River and bordered by the Laptev Sea to the west and the East Siberian Sea to the east—the New Siberian Archipelago, or simply the New Siberian Islands, as they are designated on most maps. This account not only explores the climate and fauna of this inhospitable corner of Russia, but also provides a fairly detailed history of the discovery of the New Siberian Islands by Russian sailors, from the search for fur-bearing animal hunting grounds and the extraction of mammoth ivory to the identification of a potential oil and gas production area and the location of a Russian military base.

On the current map of the New Siberian Islands, Russian and Yakut names of islands, bays, coves, mountains, lakes, and capes stand alongside names given to geographical features by famous industrialists, navigators, and explorers who sacrificed their lives to reach places where no one had gone before and to reveal new lands and the planet's secrets to humanity. These include the Cossacks Mikhail Stadukhin and Merkury Vatin, industrialists Ivan Lyakhov and Yakov Sannikov, the exiled official Matvey Gedenshtrom, Russian naval officers Dmitry and Khariton Laptev, Pyotr Anjou and Ferdinand Wrangel, Alexander Kolchak and Baron Eduard Toll, the American explorer George DeLong, and many, many others.

The book contains approximately 700 toponyms of the New Siberian Archipelago—the largest number known to date. Among them are over sixty named toponyms, most of which are accompanied by biographical essays. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings, with a separate section featuring original color photographs and drawings of notable geographical features and characteristic landscapes of the New Siberian Islands.
