The life of the privileged Russian nobility of the Moscow state in the 17th and early 18th centuries was far from easy and serene. Like provincial nobles, Moscow nobles bore the full brunt of regimental and military service. Much of their lives, often until old age, were spent on military campaigns. Neither court service nor administrative activity spared them from participation in battle. As a result, by the end of their careers, they were suffering not only from wounds sustained in battle but also from numerous illnesses resulting from their lifestyle—difficult physical exertion, unsanitary, and often extreme conditions. For their privileged position in society, nobles, including those from the capital, paid a high price. O. V. Novokhatko's book examines the daily life of the Moscow nobility during the reign of the first Romanovs, including their conditions of service and retirement.
