"Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka" was the first major work of Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852), which brought him real fame and success. Eight novels, in which mysticism easily neighbors with reality, and comedy - with scarecrows, immediately won the love of the capital's public, including Pushkin himself. Gogol's colorful characters, folklore and dialectisms, appetizing descriptions of local cuisine - all this formed the classic image of Malorossiya, so familiar to everyone from school. In the New Year's Eve story "The Night Before Christmas", the blacksmith Vakula, trying to win the heart of the unapproachable Oksana, goes to St. Petersburg on horseback to get the Tsar's shingles. The design of this limited edition of the Bright Pages series is inspired by a painting by Konstantin Alexandrovich Veshchilov (1878-1945) and Gogol's characters.
