Melanie's life is changing rapidly. Recently, thirteen-year-old Nola, the daughter of her lover Jack, whom they have both only recently learned of, has been living in her house. Nola has an elaborate large dollhouse with figurines of the inhabitants, a replica of one of the town's old mansions. The mansion, which has a complicated history, is said to be haunted. Melanie and Jack go to the landlady's house to get to the bottom of these rumors, because recently Melanie and Nola have been receiving mysterious and sometimes satisfyingly frightening signs from otherworldly forces.
