This edition presents to Russian readers for the first time the missing volume of F. F. Zelinsky's "The Ancient World" cycle, conceived and executed by the author as a popular account of the events of the ancient era, from the mythical times to the last days of the Roman Empire.
The cycle comprises four volumes, which form paired subcycles: "Hellas" and "Rome."

The first volume, "Fairytale Antiquity," first published in Russia in 1922-1923, is well known; the remaining volumes were written in the 1930s in Polish. Both books of the Roman subcycle ("The Roman Republic" and "The Roman Empire") were translated into Russian and published by Aletheia in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Thus, only the second volume of the "Hellas" subcycle, "Independent Hellas," a book that directly continues "Fairytale Antiquity," remains unknown in Russia. As the author emphasized, the narrative will lead us “from myth to historical legend, and from it to history as such.”
