The art and architecture of ancient Greece are typically associated with perfect form, harking back to Plato's world of unchanging ideas. A new book by philosopher, historian, and cultural theorist Mikhail Yampolsky offers a far more complex understanding of form in Greece. It begins with an analysis of the concept of "physis," a key concept in pre-Socratic natural philosophy. This concept itself, often translated as "nature," alludes to the continuous growth and change that make understanding the world nearly impossible, as our consciousness is incapable of grasping its ceaseless metamorphoses. The book demonstrates how logos introduces a kind of "stoppage" into this elusiveness, making dynamics comprehensible. A similar model is found in the Greek understanding of the body and art, where any dynamic presupposes moments of rest. Finally, a similar understanding of form is also found in the organization of the Greek polis—the first political model of democracy, understood as a struggle suspended on the brink of destruction and chaos, taking shape. Yampolsky's book offers a broad picture of Greek civilization, viewed through the prism of a largely innovative understanding of form as a moment of comprehensibility included in the dynamics of the world.
