For Akinfiy Demidov, the renowned factory owner, 1735 proved the most difficult year. The family was torn apart by feuds, sometimes even murder. A government investigation into arrears threatened ruin, and suspicions that Demidov was minting counterfeit money persisted. Count Biron, the Empress's favorite, extorted a huge bribe. Mining director Tatishchev launched a raid on dissenters, the main force behind the Demidov factories. And the final blow came when the Nevyansk factory, the "capital" of the industrial empire, was shut down: a demon attacked the factory, burning its workers to death.

In his novel "The Nevyansk Tower," Alexei Ivanov recounts Akinfiy Demidov's struggle with the demon of fire. Ivanov's dark Gothic style reflects the course of history. In the 18th century, Russia was an agrarian country, but a new mentality—an industrial one—was already taking shape at the Demidov factories. In the 19th century, it reigned supreme throughout the industrial Urals. In the 20th century, it acquired a nationwide scale. And this future began at the Nevyansk plant, over which the mysterious and beautiful Nevyansk Tower still rises.
