"If the first sentence does not contribute to the achievement of a unified effect, then the writer has failed from the start," wrote Edgar Allan Poe, well known to the Russian reader in various guises: a master of horror, a science fiction writer, and a brilliant poet. Edgar Poe in his work managed not only to combine important ideas of the era, but also to clothe them in original forms that remain exciting to this day. It is no coincidence that the American romantic poet was close to the masters of Russian literature and influenced many of them.

A thoughtful approach to fine literature was also close to Valery Bryusov, whose translations formed the basis of this edition. As an appendix, the book is supplied with versions of classical and modern translations of Poe's legendary poem "The Raven." Like its creator, "The Raven", who croaked "Nevermore", still remains a mystery to us in many ways - and each reader is looking for his own key to the secrets of the American master.
