Lidiya Zaparina's "True Stories" are familiar to many from Orthodox samizdat, from publications in the magazine "Moscow," and in other publications, both domestic and foreign, under the pseudonym L. Shoste and unsigned. Their author, or rather, their collector, literary editor, and distributor (during the former Soviet era), was a Muscovite born in 1903. Her hand-made booklets with pictures and amusing captions told the story of Orthodox Christian life and beliefs from the 1930s to the 1970s.

All the stories included in the collection, with a few exceptions, were either heard directly by the author from the people who experienced the events described, or she herself participated in them. The collection also includes notes written by Lidiya Zaparina over the years—excerpts from her book "Big and Small," which, like most of the stories, are being published for the first time.

Lidiya Sergeevna discerned traces of Divine Providence in everything that happened. She wrote her stories in a clear, lucid style. This is high literature. And yet, at the same time, there is no fiction in it.
