This is the first complete translation of Ariosto's poem into Russian, in the original rhymed octavos. Another complete translation of this work, published by Mikhail Leonovich Gasparov in two volumes in the series Literary Monuments in 1993, was written in free verse with the preservation of equilinearity. Attempts to present a complete translation of the poem were made earlier, but in prose - in 1892 a complete translation edited by V.R. Zotov was published, most likely made not from Italian but from French, and another almost complete prose translation was made by P.S. Molchanov in the middle of the 19th century. In addition, since the early 19th century, individual passages from Ariosto's work have been translated into Russian by such poets as K.S. Batiushkov, S.E. Raich, A.S. Pushkin, V.Y. Bryusov, A.I. Kurosheva, and E.M. Solonovich. Alexander Triandafilidi worked on his translation of Ariosto's poem for about 20 years, from 1998 to 2017 (the rest of the time was spent preparing the edition). He specializes in translations from medieval and Renaissance literature of various genres. In particular, he has translated such works as the verse chivalric novels by Chretien de Troyes "Lancelot, or the Knight of the Cart" and "Perceval, or the Tale of the Grail" (in co-authorship with N.V. Zababurova), novels in verse by Chretien de Troyes "Lancelot, or the Knight of the Cart" and "Perceval, or the Tale of the Grail" (in co-authorship with N.V. Zababurova), a novel in verse by Giovanni Boccaccio "Filostrato", Geoffrey Chaucer's poem "House of Glory", Angelo Poliziano's poem "Stanzas for the Tournament", Jacopo Sannazzaro's pastoral novel "Arcadia", Giambattista Gvarini's tragicomedy in verse "The Faithful Shepherd".
