In his book, Zachary M. Howlett explores the social, political, religious, and economic aspects of the gaokao, China’s national entrance exam for higher education. Some nine million high school students take it each year. For hundreds of millions of rural Chinese, it is one of the few paths to urban life.

Howlett’s book, which chronicles the experiences of young people from low-income backgrounds, shows that the exam continues to haunt people’s lives long after it has been taken. It is seen as a life-changing event that determines their life prospects.

Howlett concludes that the exam offers those who undergo it both a way to rebel against the social hierarchy and to gain acceptance within it.
