Denis Ivanovich Fonvizin (1745–1792) was one of the first Russian playwrights and a witty satirist of the 18th century.

The comedy "The Minor" centers on Mitrofanushka, a lazy and foolish young man who dreams of marrying not for love, but for convenience. His domineering mother, Prostakova, is willing to do anything for a favorable match. Against this backdrop, the voices of the noble characters—Starodum, Pravdin, and Sophia—who defend the ideas of reason and honor, resonate especially vividly.

This book introduces the reader to the main genres of Fonvizin's work: drama, poetry, prose, and journalism.
