"Early on the morning of November 2nd, the half-dog Napoleon III escaped from the Mshaga fur farm"—with this phrase, in the spirit of detective fiction, Yuri Koval's novella "Nedopyosok" (Underdog). The writer admitted that he always wanted to find his audience from the very first sentence, so that anyone who opened the book would immediately understand: this is a must-read.
"Nedopyosok" is a must-read!
The main characters of the story are an entire class of second-graders and one preschooler from the village of Kovylkino. The action takes place at the end of the first term of the school year and lasts four days. But how many events and adventures unfold in those four days! The arctic fox, Nedopesok, flees, and is caught up with... What's remarkable: in this pursuit, children often prove wiser than adults.
Yuri Koval originally addressed "Nedopyosok" to children; the story is written simply and clearly. Unhurriedly, in Koval's style. With just the right amount of irony. The tone of the narrative was brilliantly captured by the artist Evgeniya Dvoskina: her drawings (there are many of them!) are incredibly in tune with the talented text.
