Some languages, including Australian tribes and northern peoples, have a grammatical tense called "non-future." Mysticism occurs "now" and "already," while the future is distant and uncertain. Miracles exist in the present, which only pretends to be the future. Vladimir Berezin's characters, familiar from "SNT" and "The Pentagram of Osoaviakhim," led by Vladimir Raevsky, see a transformed present, diverging like paths in Borges's garden. This is a world in which the Tolstoyans, rather than the Bolsheviks, won; coffee is banned as a drug. A concrete wolf stands amidst the northern plain, and the King of Fishes dwells in the quiet city waters. Death comes to chess players, demanding they finish their old game, and an accordionist saves humanity from the mad ideas of a terrible dwarf. A bronze Rosenthal observes all this with detachment from his pedestal. Perhaps what seems outlandish and fantastical today will prove to be an everyday reality tomorrow. After all, such is the great law of the demiurge writers, and we've seen similar transformations many times before...
