Thomas Fuller (1608-1661) was an English historian and church figure. He remains extremely popular among English speakers thanks to his catchphrases, which have become proverbs and idioms, permeating the language. The Oxford English Dictionary cites Thomas Fuller six thousand times. His sayings have also appeared in Russian collections of aphorisms, but none of his works have yet been translated into Russian. The author of such popular books of his time as The History of the Holy War, The Ecclesiastical History of England, and Notable Men of England, Thomas Fuller was not an original philosopher, but he was a witty thinker, and a sense of humor is common to people of all times. Humor, woven into the realities of such a distant and alien era, casts a special light on it, allowing us to see the world of the 17th century through the eyes of its inhabitants.

"Things of Heaven and Things of Earth" is one of his most popular books, having undergone numerous reprints. It consists of short biographies and essays on morals, seemingly covering every aspect of the extremely complex structure of English life. The book opens with a brief biographical sketch, offering insight into the extraordinary personality of Thomas Fuller and the remarkable times in which he lived (the author took an active part in the English Civil War of 1642-1651, leaving a particularly polemical mark on the book).

The translator has carefully reproduced Thomas Fuller's distinctive style and preserved the wordplay that permeates his texts. The translation is accompanied by extensive notes that reveal numerous hidden quotations, allusions, and allusions, and contextualize the narrative. The index includes the names of approximately 900 individuals, each of whom is briefly described in the notes. The illustrations in the original source are supplemented with fascinating images from the era. The bibliography includes about 500 titles.
