"Edifying Novels" is the third book (after "Don Quixote" and "Comedies and Interludes") by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra published in the "Literary Monuments" series. And this is no coincidence, because the shadow of "Don Quixote", the greatest novel in the history of world literature, has unfairly overshadowed other wonderful works of the outstanding Spaniard. A collection of twelve edifying novellas, published in 1613, at a time when work on the adventures of the cunning hidalgo was nearing completion, caused wild delight among contemporaries: in their eyes, these mini-novels surpassed the Cretan Labyrinth in cunning - the creation of the glorious Daedalus, and in plot twists they could sometimes be compared with the "inventions of the big-nosed poet" Ovid. Together with a gypsy camp, the reader sets off on a journey across the vast expanses of magnificent Andalusia, gets involved in bloody sea skirmishes in a campaign with English pirates, discovers a strange brotherhood of thieves living like a knightly order - according to the laws of honor and dignity, becomes a witness to the disgusting atrocities of the Barbary pirates, meets an eccentric Salamancan student who imagines himself to be made of glass and therefore blessed with wisdom, for in glass "the soul works faster and better than in the body, earthy and heavy." In the book's crowning "Novel about the Conversation of Dogs," the author turns to an unusual for him animal fantasy in the spirit of Apuleius and Lucian and brings onto the stage a pair of remarkable representatives of the canine tribe: the four-legged ones conduct a conversation in the manner of the Cynic philosophers. But whether all this really happened or was just a dream of the lieutenant, who was taking a nap on a bed in the Valladolid hospital (as one of the tailed sages noted, “everything we have experienced and everything we experience is a dream”), remains a mystery.
