This book offers a new approach to the problem of violence and shows how economic and political behavior are closely interrelated. Most societies classified as “natural states” limit violence by politically manipulating the economy to create privileged interest groups. This limits the use of violence by powerful individuals, but it also creates barriers to economic and political development. On the other hand, modern societies create open access to economic and political organizations, stimulating political and economic competition. This book helps to understand why open access societies are more politically and economically developed than “natural states,” and how about twenty-five countries have made the transition from one type of society to another.
