Aspiring actress Anna Coupeau, nicknamed Nana, captivates the entire male population of Paris in a single evening. The city's most prominent men vie for the young courtesan's affections, committing one reckless act after another, but the girl's attentions bring no one happiness. Unable to manage money, Nana sinks deeper into debt, while her admirers are beset by tragedy: they go bankrupt, lose their families, and lose their social standing.

"Nana" is the ninth novel in the extensive "Rougon-Macquart" cycle and, according to critics, one of the author's finest works. In the character of Nana, Zola intended to capture the outward splendor and the corrupt inner nature of the Second Empire, an era that came to an end with France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
