It is no coincidence that the era of Emperor Marcus Aurelius of the Antonine dynasty is called the "golden age" of the Roman world (pax romana). "The philosopher on the throne," as he was nicknamed, Marcus Aurelius pursued a thoughtful and balanced policy, winning the love of his contemporaries and embodying for them the ideal of a ruler.
Nevertheless, his reign coincided with the slow decline of the Roman Empire, which was entering a period of cultural and economic crisis, and this premonition of the end can be read in the diary entries of the mature emperor, known under various titles: "Alone with myself," "Reflections on myself," "Epistle to myself." All of them, however, reflect the main feature of this work - its diary-like nature, its inward-looking nature, its reflection. The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius became the quintessence of his philosophical views in the mainstream of late Stoicism: “Nothing happens to anyone that he cannot bear.” It is quite possible that Marcus Aurelius the Emperor gave up his earthly glory to Marcus Aurelius the Philosopher.
