Like the many high-profile events associated with the name of the "merry prankster" Ken Kesey, his first book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962), created a stir in the American literary scene. Kesey was recognized as a highly talented writer, and the novel became a staple of the Beat and hippie communities.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a raw and devastatingly honest depiction of the boundaries between sanity and madness. "If anyone wants to feel the pulse of our times, let him read Kesey. And if all goes well and things don't change, he'll be read into the next century," wrote the Los Angeles Times. Indeed, the book continues to live on today, retaining its immense popularity.

The novel was adapted into a film of the same name (directed by Milos Forman, 1975), which captivated the world and won five Oscars. Numerous performances have also been staged in various countries, including Russia.
