Surprisingly, before Ivan Efremov, our post-revolutionary literature had not published a single work related to Ancient Egypt and the past of the African continent. In this sense, Efremov was the first to artistically comprehend the topic and write a captivating history that is still read today.
The fame of Djoser, the unifying pharaoh, haunts Djedefre, a wielder of divine power but not as successful and powerful as his great predecessor. Moreover, the priests of the god Ra, the true rulers of Egypt, do not allow the young pharaoh to realize his ambitious plans. Then, on the advice of the high priest of the god Thoth, Djedefre, in search of glory, sends an expedition south to search for the mysterious land of Punt, the extreme end of the world. And so, by supreme command, the ships, commanded by Baurdjed, the Tsar's treasurer, set out on a perilous voyage to the ends of the earth ("Baurdjed's Journey")...
The second part of the novel ("On the Edge of the Oecumene") is separated from the first by more than ten centuries.
The young Greek Pandion, fleeing Cretan thugs, ends up on a Phoenician ship. When it sinks off the coast of Egypt, the surviving youth is taken into slavery. The backbreaking forced labor does not suppress his desire for freedom, and through incredible effort, Pandion regains his freedom. But to return to his homeland, he faces a difficult and dangerous voyage through the wilds of Central Africa.
In addition to the novel, the book includes the novella "Shadow of the Past" and short stories by Ivan Antonovich Efremov—a writer, traveler, paleontologist, and the founder of modern Russian science fiction.
